How Diabetes affects eye sight?
Diabetes increases the risk of eye problems such as diabetic retinopathy, macular oedema, cataracts and glaucoma. If you have diabetes, you are at risk of vision loss from diabetes retinopathy.
What are the causes of Diabetes?
The main causes of Diabetes are:
- Change in life style caused by increased urbanization
- Lack of physical activity and stress
- Diet (high cholesterol intake)
- Heredity
What is Diabetic Retinopathy?
Diabetic retinopathy damages blood vessels inside the retina causing vision loss and blindness. People with diabetes are at risk of developing diabetic retinopathy. Symptoms only emerge in the later stage and include blurred vision, eye strain and headaches. Regular eye exams and good diabetes management reduce the risk of diabetic retinopathy. Laser treatment is often used.
Who are all at risk?
Diabetes can affect any one at any age. Persons with affected family members and those with obese (over weight) are high risk individuals. Even young children may be affected by the Juvenile type of diabetes.
Can Diabetes be cured?
No. It can be effectively controlled.
What is Retina?
The retina is light sensitive layer on the back of the eye ball. It is the site where light rays entering the eyes are converted into chemical and electrical impulses which are carried to the brain by the retinal nerve fibers. The brain can not see if the Retina is damaged.
How diabetes damage the Retina?
The retina has many tiny blood vessels which gets nutrition from when diabetes affects these tiny blood vessels. Gradual or sudden loss of vision occurs. Sometimes, the Retina may be physically pulled from its bed leading to loss of vision.
What is Diabetic Retinopathy?
Diabetes affects the small vessels of the retina. Early diagnosis of the disease should lead to the prevention of serious vision loss. Therefore 40 plus age group and diabetics are advised periodical eye check up to prevent from the loss of vision.
