The world is beautiful, and I don’t need glasses to see it anymore!

I have been wearing glasses since I was nine years old. It was my class teacher who noticed me squinting at the blackboard to take down the notes.

I still remember how uncomfortable I felt during my first comprehensive dilated eye checkup. I was an avid reader, and I felt heartbroken when I had to stay away from my books for the next two days. I also loved painting from childhood, and I remember spending the two days wondering how many colors of nature I might be missing out on because of my problem.

Then I got my prescription glasses which totally made me look like a nerdy little girl. I was a bubbly extroverted kid, but somehow people started perceiving me as a silent, introverted girl who didn’t want to mingle with others. Even my cousins kept me at a distance once I started wearing glasses. Needless to say, I absolutely hated wearing them.

My father was very strict about the glasses because the doctors said if I don’t wear them, my eye power will slowly and gradually decline. I was worried about it, but the spectacles were like a wall between me and the world. I was insecure about myself, and I internalised others’ perceptions of me. The other kids used to mock me for wearing glasses!

I became a silent, nerdy, introverted teenager who walked with her head low. Funny how the spectacles that were supposed to help me see the world stopped me from looking at the world! It was when I joined my higher secondary that I started keeping the glasses in their box. And life was definitely better. I was happy, was being myself again, was making jokes and being the interesting person I was again! I earned a lot of friends, and I took that behaviour to college as well.

The five years of cheating on my glasses took a toll on my eyes, and I started wearing them again when I had to attend a film festival during my post-graduation days. After that, I joined an IT company and started life sitting in front of computers!

I upgraded to anti-glare spectacles, and also my prescription changed with increased power on the glass for my right eye. I had to wear them if I wanted to see things clearly. Not wearing them was not an option anymore. I used to fall asleep reading a book with my glasses on, and I would wake up to broken spectacles.

Doing the LASIK procedure was on my list by this time, but I wasn’t comfortable with the idea. The pandemic worsened my relationship with spectacles by fogging the lenses every time I took a breath with masks on!

And the troubles culminated when I met the love of my life. I really wanted to look at him without my glasses, and most importantly, I didn’t want to get married with my glasses on! The insecurities about my looks had left me long ago, and the spectacles had become a part of me by this stage of life. But the glasses were definitely still stopping me from a lot of things. From dancing, from being recklessly active, from living my life to the fullest.

I was happy when I stumbled upon an ad by Lotus on Facebook. The words ‘painless’ and ‘bladeless’ danced in front of my eyes, and I booked an appointment right away.

It was one of those times I praised the internet! I was still suspicious and unsure about it, but I was confident when the doctors clearly explained everything. The warmth and the welcoming nature of everyone at Lotus gave me a sense of being at home, in my safe place.

Everyone was really friendly and helped me get over my slight hesitancy. I had my ReLEx SMILE procedure done 10 days ago.

The procedure only took a few minutes, and nobody poked me in the eyes! It was all laser. I was back to living my life the very next day, and I could see things clearly without my glasses on! It was new and it was amazing.

I can’t stop wondering why I didn’t do this a lot earlier. I am dancing without the fear of my glasses falling. I am trying out all kinds of hairstyles, and I don’t have to secure my curly hair in a way it won’t get stuck in my glasses. I can go to misty and rainy places, and I don’t have to worry about my glasses getting foggy.

ReLEx SMILE is the best thing I have ever done for myself. And I wish this happiness and freedom to anyone out there confused about correcting their eyesight. You deserve a better life, and you can have it in a very comfortable way. Don’t waste another day!
