What is an Eye Bank?

Our eye bank is fully equipped and modernized, with highly trained staff and certified technicians, offering round the clock services to the society. Lotus eye bank is connected with our Satellite Centers – Salem, Tirupur, Mettupalayam , R.S Puram and Cochin.

A place for storing and preserving corneas that are obtained from human corpses immediately after death, used for corneal transplantation to patients with corneal defects. An eye bank is a non-profit organization managed by a medical director, an eye bank manager and eye bank technicians.

Facts about Eye Donation

  • Eyes can be donated only after death
  • Eyes must be removed within 6 hours after death.
  • Eye removal does not delay the funeral ceremony.
  • Eyes removal does not cause disfigurement.
  • Eyes are removed by a trained doctors the eye bank team does the removal of eyes at the donor’s residence.
  • The entire procedure of removing eyes takes around 10-20 minutes.
  • Religions are not against eye donation.
  • The identity of the recipient and donor is kept confidential.
  • Our eye bank is affiliated to the eye bank association of India.
  • In the event of a death in your family you can contact our eye bank as quickly as possible.
  • Eyes will be removed only with the consent of the donor’s family.

What happens after Eye Donation?

  • Contact the eye bank as quickly as possible.
  • The donor’s family receives a certificate of appreciation from the eye bank
  • The eyes are taken to the eye bank and evaluated by a trained eye bank staff
  • Tests are carried out and the tissue is sent to the corneal surgeon
  • The waiting list is referred and the recipient is called for corneal transplant
  • Corneal transplant is performed

  • If the death certificate from the physician is available, keep it ready.
  • Eye donation can be done only with the consent of the next of kin in the presence of two witnesses.
  • Close the eye lids.

  • Keep the air conditioner on if it is available.
  • Raise the head slightly by placing a pillow
